CODI's Advanced program requires some knowledge of OD and substantial experience with organizational life. The 2-day Essentials program will provide an introduction to OD and change for those with less knowledge of OD and organizations. Applicants to CODI’s Advanced program who we judge to need more background will be asked to register in the Essentials program as a prerequisite.

The OD and Change Essentials program is currently being designed. It will reflect our commitment to experiential learning, and to the union of theory and practice. Like all our programs, it will be practice-oriented and theory-based.

The course will include:

  • The history and theory of OD
  • The role of the OD professional,
  • Introduction to and practice in key OD approaches.

Date: September 23-24, 2010

Faculty: Dr. Marilyn Laiken
Course Fee: $1,000 + GST (for payments made prior to July 1)

In 2011, CODI will introduce Canada’s first OD and change certification program, "Certified Organization Development Professional (CODP)". An advisory and adjudication board is presently being formed by CODI. Assessment will consist of an exam, an interview, and a review of work history. Fundamentals or Intensive grads with considerable experience in OD and change are invited to apply, as are other highly experienced OD and change professionals, whatever their training. Certification will provide the right to add "CODP" after your name.

The Advanced Practitioner Series brings, specialized, short workshops to the OD and change community.

Teams and Change Leadership

with Dr. Marilyn Laiken, CODI Academic Co-Director
Course Fee: $600

This 2-day workshop is designed for managers, supervisors, consultants, team or project leaders, and informal group leaders in any setting.

Change leadership through team development has become a key strategy in growing high performing, 21st century organizations. Cohesive work teams, in which personal needs and organizational goals can be aligned, are central to effective organizational performance.

However, highly effective teams do not suddenly emerge on their own, fully developed and highly motivated. Successful teams require careful and consistent nurturing as they evolve from a collection of individuals to an integrated, high functioning unit that unleashes the creative potential in each of its members.

Embracing the Storming Phase; Conflict Management for
Inspired Team Performance
with Dr. Marilyn Laiken, CODI Academic Co-Director
Fall, 2010

In the morning session of this one-day workshop we will examine the issue of conflict avoidance as a cultural norm in North America. Recent Canadian research indicates that team members won‘t easily confront differences among themselves, employees won‘t deal directly with managers or colleagues who may be causing them difficulty, and managers and team leaders won‘t surface and confront the conflict that inevitably arises in group situations.

However, with the current workplace expectation of collaboration at all levels, and with team structures creating a demand for on-going interdependence, such conflict avoidance is increasingly dysfunctional and energy-depleting for teams.
In the afternoon, we will focus on Polarity Management as an approach to managing difference in a team.

  • Learn to expect conflict in a team and value it as a rich resource for creativity
  • Learn more about your own conflict management style and how it might be having an impact on a team
  • Learn and practice several skills (including giving and receiving constructive feedback) for successful conflict management

Understanding and Shaping Organizational Culture

with Sherrill Burns, Culture-Strategy Fit Inc.

Offered in May, 2010, and very well received by a full house. Expect more from Culture Strategy Fit.

The history of organizations is a litany of those that have adapted and grown in capacity, and others that have stumbled and fallen. As we look backward in time, it’s easy to see how some organizations have developed a strong
cultural foundation and unique cultural dynamics, and thereby supported sustained success.

The looming question is how OD practitioners and leaders can understand the cultural dynamics at work, and more proactively shape culture, to create vibrant organizations that fulfill their purpose.

Our session will focus on helping OD practitioners and leaders explicitly understand how culture is operating, and how they can take practical action to shape culture by design.

Upcoming possibilities for fall/2010 include evening sessions on:

  • Forging Long-term Client Relationships, and
  • OD, the Environment, and Sustainability.

Suggestions welcome!
